Politics...

The Unites States government involved in an individual's “right to die” issue? What is happening in this the United States of America? The president, the United States congress, the governor of Florida and the state legislature of Florida have gotten involved in the "right to die" issue involving Terri Schiavo. This is just too bad. The “right to die” is a private, family decision and it is dealt with every day across America.  Appropriately, the courts have gotten involved in the "right to die" controversy involving Terri Schiavo's "right to die" case. According to the Constitution of the United States of America, there is a balance of power among the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. The judicial branch must decide the legality of actions of the executive and legislative branches. Thus in the Terri Schiavo "right to die" case, it is the courts who must determine the eventual outcome of this or any "right to die" situation.

The really disappointing fact of all of this - the conviction of this Republican Administration and the Republican controlled congress that they are the supreme "powers that be". If they do not agree with a particular judicial judgment or if they do not agree with a particular person or group of Americans, they believe that they have the power to change the rules, so to speak. Slowly, this president and his Republican cronies in conjunction with the conservative, evangelical  right is trying to change the direction of the American culture to reflect their own self-appointed, self-righteous, conservative point of view. This is not the American way. This is not Democracy.

Didn't Adolph Hitler become a totalitarian dictator by legislating his point of view? By the actions of the German legislature under the direction of a crafty, unscrupulous commander in chief, Hitler legislated the laws of Germany to fit his diabolical political plan for Germany. This must not happen in the United States.

The executive, legislative and the judicial branches of government must be independent and representative of the total political spectrum found in the United States. Democracy works best when both parties are represented and share in the governing process in the American political system.

God help America.
