Politics...

The 109th Congress is in session, but who are the "rising stars" of this 109th congress?

Here are a few to keep your eye on:

Bobby Jindal, R-Louisiana, the first United States congressman of Indian descent, not native American, but Indian.
Barack Obama, D-Illinois, the only African-American senator and the fifth African-American ever elected to the Senate.
Gwendolynne Moore, D-Wisconsin, former teenage mother and welfare recipient, the first Wisconsin African-American in congress.
Mel Martinez, R-Florida, the first Cuban American in the Senate, fled Cuba when he was 15 years old.

I think that it is great that the 109th Congress is so diverse. I believe the congress should reflect the real America. All groups of Americans must be represented in congress. In fact, when I vote, if all factors are equal with the candidates running for a particular office or if I am unfamiliar with the candidates, I will usually vote for the most diverse candidate. For too long our government has been composed of "grumpy, old, white men", it's time for a change. It's time that the government reflect the diversity of our American people.

Will the 109th Congress work together with the President in a bipartisan effort to solve the problems facing America? Well, that remains to be seen. One bit of disappointing news, I read in the newspaper that a conservative group is giving Democrat senators an ultimatum - vote for President Bush's judicial nominations or face defeat in 2006. The Democrat senators are those representing the voters in several "Red" states - Senator Nelson of Florida and Senator Bird of West Virginia are two that come to mind. To me this is outright blackmail and should not be tolerated. Other other hand, Democratic leaders are saying that they will fight far right conservative candidates, judicial or cabinet, that the President nominates. This will not do. As Americans we must insist that our Congress work in a bipartisan manner to solve the problems facing the American people. There are real issues at stake. This issues are paramount in the lives of all Americans. Our elected leaders must act in a responsible manner when doing the "people's" work.

Congratulations to President George W. Bush.
