Technology and Business...

There has been a call for cell phone users to list their cell phone numbers on the infamous "Do Not Call List". Forget it. The Monday, April 25, Sun-Sentinel business insert says that a rumor was spreading saying that telemarketers were about to hit the jackpot by receiving scores of cellular phone numbers from the telecommunications companies. It was a hoax. Cell phone numbers have not, are not, and will not be released to telemarketers. No need to register your cell numbers. By the way, www.snopes.com can be valuable in uncovering the scoop on all sorts of wild rumors. Don't believe everything you hear and watch those unsolicited emails.

Companies that do business worldwide can be much more successful in their business quests if they become familiar with the customs of the rest of the world. Week days and weekends are not the same for all countries. We know the the USA's work week is Monday to Friday. Israel's work week goes from Sunday to Thursday, because of the Friday night through Saturday celebration of the Sabbath. Saudi Arabia's Moslem's holy day is is on Friday. Their work week goes from Saturday thru Wednesday. Iraq is debating what it's weekend should be in order to correlate it more with the United states and Europe.

How about hours of operation in foreign countries? They do not follow American standards. Business starting times and ending times vary by country. Conveniences that we take for granted do not exist in many foreign countries. There is not a Wal-Mart on every street corner in foreign countries. Nor are convenience stores open at all times of the day and night as in America. Some countries conduct business into the evening hours and weekends. Some start business dinners around 9:00 p.m. or later. Many companies in other countries do not conduct business until midmorning or early afternoon. The rule of thumb in conducting business in another country - be flexible.
