Health, Fitness and Lifestyle...

It's springtime, summer is almost here. You still have time to shed those excess pounds before it's bikini weather. If you are going to shed those pounds, do so for the right reasons - to maintain health, fitness and well-being. I guess your looks have something to with it, but don't let your looks be the main or only reason to firm up and get in shape. By all means do not go on another diet. Diets don't work. Rather, change your perspective and lifestyle. Some suggestions: don't eat to satisfy emotional needs. I can't help you with your emotional health. You are the only person who can do anything about such needs. However, I can offer you a suggestion or two. First come to grips with you. No, not the you I or other people see, but the you that you see. Take a realistic, unadulterated look at yourself. If you see things that you do not like, change them. You may need help to do so. If that is the case, seek professional help. In the words of Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror, "I'm Starting With The Man In The Mirror I'm Asking Him To Change His Ways And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place (If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place) Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change (Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change) (Na Na Na, Na Na Na, Na Na,Na Nah)".

No matter what you may think of Michael Jackson, he is still the king of pop. He is an uniquely talented artist and he has shaped the future of music for ever. By the way, don't be so quick to judge another person. He has not been convicted of any wrong doing, he is innocent until proven guilty. In any case, if he is guilty of child molestation, then he needs to be punished. Remember he is still a human being. He may be "sick" or "different". In any case, he must answer for his actions, but we must remember that we are a caring people. "Vengeance is mine", says the Lord.

Back to the bikini weather days, once your decide what you need to change, then do it. Develop a plan, be motivated and do it. Eat healthy, low calorie foods. Remember, if you eat more calories than you use in a day, you will put on weight. So, conversely, if you eat fewer calories a day, you will lose weight.

Get control over your relationship with food. Put food in perspective. Eat to live, don't live to eat. I suggest eating 6 small meals a day. Portion control is a key factor in getting control of food. At meal time, put smaller portions of food on your plate and do not take seconds. Eat slowly, chew every morsel of food until it's completely "enjoyed" in the mouth then swallow. Eat low calorie, low fat and nutritionally healthy foods.

Don't skip meals, but if you are not hungry, don't force feed yourself, eat a little. If you are hungry, eat something, don't starve yourself. Chose food wisely. Never reward yourself with food. Food is not a reward, food is necessary for life. Eat a variety of foods. Once in awhile eat some chocolate or a piece of cake or pie, but don't do it at every meal or every day. Eat in moderation.

And remember, your weight or fitness level has no bearing on your worth as a human being. You are you, you are a child of God, and you deserve to be here. Above all, be happy with yourself. In short, love and respect youself. God does and I do.

I can't pass up this opportunity to comment on the Terri Schiavo situation. The religious aspect of the "right to die" situation will be discussed in the Religion and Spiritualism section of this newsletter. Mrs. Schiavo did not sign a living will. The mess in Florida concerning her "right to die" status could have been avoided if she had completed a living will. A living will instruct your caregiver(s) on how to handle your right to die or right to live issues if you are not in a position to speak for yourself. It provides your caregiver(s) instructions on your care if you are ever incapacitated. All adults, regardless of age, are urged to complete a living will. Not only does it provide for you  "the right to die", it provides for you "the right to live". Regardless of the religious implications, a living will provides your instructions on your care when you are physically or mentally unable to make your views known.
