Discussion of the Month September and I have been cancer free for one year. I almost want to forget the whole experience. Not because it was so bad, but because of the stark truth of the matter. Cancer or any terminal disease could strike anyone at anytime. It's a little scary to even think about it. I heard somewhere that the things you worry about never occur. I don't think that is necessarily true. The healthy view of the situation to me is to embrace the reality, but don't overemphasize and worry about the possibilities. I think the saying, "take one day at a time" says it best. In other words, I'll never forget the feeling, be thankful for the outcome, keep the situation in perspective and make the most of each day. Did you know that you are affected by my brush with melanoma cancer? See how thoughtful I am. I want to share all of my situations with you. We, who are blood relatives, now have a common link in our medical history. We have melanoma cancer in our family. Each of us must be informed, aware and vigilant in the physical condition of our bodies. Yes, we should examine our bodies on a regular basis for any changes or irregularities in moles or any other marks on our bodies. In the broader scope we need to be aware of other medical abnormalities affecting our general health. We live in our own body, we must be aware of the medical condition of our bodies. Now don't take this to an extreme. Don't become a "worrywart" about this. Worry is just another word for inaction. Just take a weekly self inventory of your body and it's functioning. You know the drill. In short, if something appears out of the normal in regards to your appearance or physical well being - examine, research and talk to your primary care physician. Don't assume. Be realistic and proactive. I'm really getting into this HMO stuff. Until recently I would have referred to your primary physician as your family doctor. Now I use the current term, primary physician. I learn fast. *********************************************************** Back to work for me. Over the summer I was contemplating working a few more years than I had first anticipated. I just couldn't fathom giving up my salary for retirement. I thought a few more years, maybe until I turn 60 or maybe even 62 when I would be eligible for my full retirement and not subject to penalties for early retirement. Hopefully by that time I would be able to pay off my condo and be in a good place financially. I just completed my second week of work, as of August 21, 2004. There are more new students than ever. Schedule changes are coming in by the dozens. The "system" seems to be coming apart at the seems. Politics and the state assessment test are taking center stage, upstaging the real reason for our jobs - the education of children. The needs of the individual student seem to be low on the list of priorities of the powers that be. Stress is at an all time high. Well all bets are off. I'm out of there as soon as possible. I don't think that my particular job is any different than any of yours' as far as stress and working conditions. The work place is different than it was a few years ago. Priorities are certainly topsy-turvy. Today the top priority in any organization is more for less. The individual worker is a commodity. More is expected from the worker and fewer resources are provided. You've heard the saying," be a team player." It seems that the statement really means, "do what I tell you and don't make any trouble." A real team is concerned with the well being of all it's players, not just the concerns of the team leader. In many cases the team leader has one goal, get the job done at any cost. There is no mutual respect. No concern for the well being of all the members of the team. Being a team player sucks. Finally, this brings me to the real reasons why the work place has changed for the worse, the quality of the workforce and the "customers" we serve . I don't want to sound pessimistic, but I really wonder about the kind of people we are finding in our places of business. Whether it is the corner grocery store, the hospital or school or governmental place of business, the quality and the integrity of both the employee and the employer is questionable. What is happening to our society. As far as the people who we come in contact, as a society we are rude, hard to get along with, self centered and in many cases people of low morals and ethics. Just read the paper or watch the news on television about the absurd occurrences within our society. These things that are happening in our neighborhoods, country and world are not happening in a vacuum. These kinds of things are becoming the rule rather than the exception. To function in the world of the 21st century one must constantly be on the alert for unethical and irrational behavior of (perhaps chemical dependent) people and deal accordingly. How do we deal with these situations? First and foremost be proactive. Realize the situation and do remove your rose colored glasses. See the situation as it exists not the way you would like it to exist and deal with it. Deal with it in a fair, genuine and human manner. You don't necessarily have to fight fire with fire. State your case and then move on. Above all, always keep the well being of yourself and love ones as your number one priority.

Manchurian Candidate was the best movie that I saw this summer. Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep both did outstanding jobs in the movie. They both are two of my all time best actors. As you may know, the movie is a remake of the 1962 movie of the same name, but with contemporary adjustments. It made me wonder about our current government. What is really happening in Washington? I'm sure that it is not as sinister as the events in the movie, but one does wonder. The Village another good movie. It was sort of a thriller. Maybe thriller is not the correct word. Think of The Sixth Sense or Signs (2002) and you will get the picture (no pun intended). The movie was creepy. It made you think and what you thought, wasn't always on target. That is all I'm going to say. Collateral Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx were spectacular. It took a little getting use to imagining Tom Cruise as the "bad" guy, but he was on outstanding "bad" guy. By the end of the movie I totally disliked Tom Cruise's character. Jamie Foxx did an outstanding job, too. The last 45 minutes of the movie were the most interesting and suspenseful minutes of the movie. Again, there was a twist at the end. And then again, the good guy won and got the girl. The 2004 Summer Olympics, anyone watching. Most of the people I've talked to haven't been watching the Olympics. I turned it on once or twice, but usually changed the channel. I don't think there's much interest this year. I wonder why? Maybe there's so much going on in the world we just don't have the time. Maybe because Greece is so far away. Or maybe terrorism has put a damper on the festivities. I sincerely hope not. We need to live our lives in spite of the threat of terror.

Health & Fitness Flu shot time is once again in our horizon. My appointment for my flu shot is in mid-October. I hope they receive the vaccine by that time. The paper said that the first batch of flu vaccine was tainted. Great, just what thousands of American want to hear. Get the flu shot to prevent the flu and you may get a different disease instead. The paper also said that the first shipment of the flu vaccine (the non-tainted one) should arrive in plenty of time for administration and the quantity of vaccine should cover the demand this year. My doctor says that members of the work force are advised to get the flu shot, in addition to the traditional groups. This is to cut down on employee absenteeism. Heck I'm still going to miss a couple days of work this winter. I may not get the flu, but I still plan to blame it on the flu. It's easy to say, "I have the flu". But if you really had the flu it would not be a day at the beach. The flu can be deadly. I believe influenza was the leading cause of death in the early 20th century. Remember the flu immunization will not give you the flu. And getting the flu shot does not mean that you will not get "sick" this winter. The flu immunization is not a wonder cure. It is an immunization against the strain or strains of flu that the experts feel will be more prevalent this winter. Believe me, you don't want to get the flu. *********************************************************** Broward County, Florida, my county, got it's first case of the West Nile Disease in August. A 59 year old female was the first Broward resident to get the West Nile Disease. She died. Yes, I make sure I wear my repellant, containing DEET, when I do my walking at night. I don't want to be the second Broward resident to get the disease.

Politics Kudos to Vice President Cheney. (See "Thought For The Month" below) The Vice President has distanced himself from the President on the issue of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. This issue is not worthy of a constitutional amendment. The United States Constitution is a revered document. It provides the essence of the democracy that we Americans abide. Same-sex marriage is not an issue that should be determined constitutionally. At the very least, it's a states' issue. At the most, it's a private issue for individuals to deal with. It is not a religious issue. Although a religious sect may refuse to marry couples of the same-sex. In all practical terms it's a private, individual issue. I agree with the Vice President, it is an issue involving freedom. *********************************************************** Is presidential nominee John Kerry's Vietnam record a political issue? I take John Kerry at his word, as well as the federal government. The United States government presented him with his awards. If you feel that John Kerry did not "deserve" his wartime awards, then take it up with the United States government. What about his behavior after he returned from Vietnam? He became a war critic. By that time, he was expressing the obvious. The war was and remains a mistake. War atrocities did exist. He was exercising his freedom of speech. How can this be a 2004 presidential issue? Politics makes strange bed fellows. Both sides of the aisle are guilty of exaggerating the truth. The American voter must make his or her own, individual and private decision as to who will be the next United States president. John Kerry is losing ground. The gains that the Kerry campaign had made after the Democratic Convention are eroding. The mud has begun to be slung. The Republicans are masters of dirty politics. Yes, the Democrats do play dirty politics, but they are not as adept at it as the Republicans. Remember the 2000 Republican Nomination Campaign. The Bush campaign attacked the military record of Senator John McCain. How could anyone or any group of people find anything to attack concerning the Vietnam record of John McCain? Truly despicable. I predict that the unethical attacks, fears and smears of the Bush campaign will be the deciding factor in the 2004 presidential election. I will go so far as to predict that the 2004 presidential election will be won by a substantial margin by George W. Bush. If this win occurs it will be the beginning of the end of the middle class and life as we know it today. Life in the United States of America will be changed. This will not destroy our great country. We will bounce back. The middle class will rise again. If all this happens, history will record the events and our grand children and great-grand children will study about the erosion of the middle class in the early 21st century in their history books. They will study about the middle class crisis much like we have studied about the great war in Europe, the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. History will place President George W. Bush and the Bush administration's effectiveness, success, popularity and ethical standing well below that of President Richard M. Nixon. In the end, America and the middle class will survive. Individual rights will be preserved. If you love the middle class and respect the rights of the individual, then vote democrat in 2004. *********************************************************** Zell Miller, please resign from the Democratic Party. You have abandoned your political roots. You have no right to be a Democrat. Your actions have dictated this sentiment. Do the right thing, resign from the Democratic Party so you may stand arm and arm with your true political party, the Republican Party. You are not a true Democrat any longer. You have the right to support the candidate of your choice. You do not have the right to call yourself a Democrat when your actions prove otherwise. Do the respectful thing.

Religion & Spiritualism Is same-sex marriage a religious issue? As I've said before, the execution of the ceremony is definitely a religious issue. A church based wedding is at the discretion of the particular church or religious sect. However, the concept of two same-sex individuals wanting to share their lives together under the legal protection that is guaranteed to all Americans under the Constitution, is not a religious issue. It is a personal issue. A civil union with all the legal benefits of a "marriage" seems to me to be a appropriate compromise. Such a civil union is an issue of freedom. In most religious situations, the problems develop when one person or a group of people think that they and only they have the correct, God inspired answer. This answer maybe for them, but they make the mistake of applying it to all people. In reality each person must find his or her correct, God inspired answer for himself or herself. In the end it is God's (or whatever you call your God) job to determine the correctness or the rightness of all of man and woman's actions. *********************************************************** I believe in the authenticity of the fifth gospel and it's message. The gospel that was discovered in the 1940's. It was discredited and declared heresy by the Catholic Church because it would have undermined the authority of the hierarchy of the church. Simply, it suggests that the church should be operated in the manner similar to the ideas and actions of it's founder Jesus Christ. It gives a view of church operation and the role of the clergy in direct contrast to the present day clergy declared rules of operation. The movie The Stigmata revolves around the fifth gospel, the Gospel of Thomas. The movie is a drama. The movie is for entertainment. It is not gospel, not fact and it even may be fiction. The premise of the movie, the Gospel of Thomas, may be in fact true.

Business and Technology The new workplace overtime rules took place August 23, 2004. The Bush administration has delivered to their business cronies an election year gift. These changes have been sought by business for years. The results of the changes are unclear. Of course Democrats oppose the changes, Republicans applaud them. The (Fort Lauderdale) Sun-Sentinel, in the August 22, 2004 issue discusses the major changes to the workplace overtime rules as reported by The Associated Press:
There they go again, destroying the middle class. Many people who make more than $23,660 are anything but wealthy. They need that overtime in order to live. Many eligible workers will become ineligible for overtime because there employers may change the duties or the category of their jobs. Example: I read in the newspaper or saw on the TV news a few months ago that the government (I don't remember the particular department) was thinking about reclassifying the category of "fast food worker" to that of Professional. What an absurdity. If this came to pass, then these people would not be eligible for overtime pay. These people are among the poorest paid workers in our society. Many times they are not teenagers, rather, they are older Americans who have lost their professional jobs. These are the types of unethical practices that the Bush administration and the Republicans are trying to employ in order to protect the wealthiest of Americans. This is downright obscene. And don't say, "these people could get better jobs, it's their own fault". Many times they are caught up in the downfall of our economy. They have fallen between the cracks. All hardworking and enterprising Americans deserve the right to a fair wage for a fair job. ****************************************************************************************************
