Discussion of the Month

September, school days, the end of summer and apple cider. Fall is not far off, a matter of days. The 2003-2004 school year has started in most places. Good luck to all going back to school, whether it be for educational purposes or employment purposes. Have a great year. I can almost her the sigh of relief by all those Mom's and Dad's. It's been a long summer for a lot of people. There's nothing like the love of a Mom or Dad for their children, but sometimes the start of school can be a blessing.

When I was growing up I always enjoyed the thoughts of going back to school. To kind of start over again is refreshing and motivational. Same is true today. Education is one of the few jobs where you have a specific start and stop for each year of work. You enjoy the opportunity to regroup, to refresh yourself, to reactivate those educational juices. There's nothing like experiencing the mystery of children. Working in a school helps me to stay young. I'm always aware of the latest trends and news. Kids keep me informed on "what's happening". They don't always tell me directly, in words, but I catch on one way or another. The best part of the experience, I get to go home at 2:45 p.m.

I remember fondly the last movie of summer vacation at the Columbia. We would go to the matinee at the Columbia in downtown Sharon. Sometimes Dad would come home for lunch and drop us off at the theatre on his way back to work. Sometimes we would walk to the show. About 4:30 or so we would walk to Dad's garage for a ride home at 5:00. Sometimes we would see the same movie 2 times. Those were the days. However, except for walking to Dad's garage, I do a lot of the same now.

At that last movie before school, we were usually given a pencil box or something from the Columbia. I remember once we were sitting in the main audience, on the first floor, someone in the balcony spit over the side and the wad ended up right in the middle of my pencil box. I didn't like that at all.

Some of you my remember our explorations in the balcony. At one time the only restrooms were on the second floor. We would always be a littler leery of going up there alone. Several times we would explore the second floor. One time we got a little more excited about our adventure. We were all over that floor. Going up and down the rows of seats in the balcony. Of course no one was seated in the balcony, it was closed. An attendant found us and reprimanded us. We were scared to death.

You may think, "the Columbia, big deal". Yes, it was a big deal to me. The Columbia was the closest thing to a big Hollywood type theatre that I could experience. Those old time city theaters were one of a kind. For a very short period of time when I was in seventh grade, I planned to be a playwright when I grew up. The Columbia influenced me in that decision. Now when I go to the cinemas, I think of the Columbia and feel secure.

Enough about the Columbia.

Fall or autumn, whatever you call it, is one of my favorite times of the year. The heat of summer has subsided, even in Florida. It's replaced by a scent of all those October type things. Crisp air, falling leaves, colorful leaves, pumpkins, etc., etc. I remember going to Boycans (spelling?) for apple cider. Particularly on Saturday afternoons or evenings. Remember the bushels of apples for sale? The weather was beautiful. As I said before, the air smelled fresh and appealing. The cider tasted pretty good, too.

Some September dates worth noting:

 1. Labor Day

 4. Ryan graduates from ITT with an Associate Degree in Software Application and Programming, 6pm at Hubbard High School. Then back to ITT for another year to finish a second Associate Degree in Web Design. Congratulations Ryan! Keep up the good work!

 7. Grandparents Day

14. Ted's Birthday

17. Sandy and Steve's Anniversary

23. Autumn Begins

25. Patrick and Michelle's Anniversary

26. Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown

27. Rosh Hashanah

Patrick and Michelle married for 10 years. It just seems like yesterday that we all met at that Holiday Inn outside of Pittsburgh for the wedding weekend. That was so much fun. But 10 years! What a great family weekend.

Sandy and Steve married 9 years. Another great weekend. The only thing that would have made it better was if Mom was there, but she was there. I remember my friend Mrs. Ogg rescheduled her knee surgery so that she and her daughter could be at the reception. By the way, she had her surgery the next week. The day before she was to be released from the hospital she suffered a cerebral aneurysm. They operated and she lived, but her quality of life was diminished a bit. She died in November 2001.

Since we are on the subject, the thing I remember most about Judy and Ted's wedding was the cookie table. I've never seen so many cookies assembled in one place before or since. So many people made cookies. A good number of those cookies were made by the Stabile ladies. The cookie table looked so nice. And the cookies tasted so good.

It's good to remember the times of our lives. It's comforting. We can continue our life's journey with the comfort of pleasant memories. It's like eating mashed potatoes and gravy. Or eating a thick slice of Mom's freshly baked bread with butter or jelly on it. Or for people like Patti and I, opening a box of Philadelphia or Daffin's candy. It just makes you feel dog gone good.

It's definitely the hurricane season in South Florida. Although on quiet side thus far, September is usually the most active month for tropical development. It makes sense. After several months of heat and humidity the waters off west Africa produce the tropical disturbances that eventually turn into tropical waves, tropical depressions, tropical storms and eventually hurricanes. The path of these tropical disturbances, yes, you got it, west. Point of ultimate impact is too many times the United States.

In August a tropical system assaulted South Florida. The coast didn't miss this precipitation this time. The coast did need the precipitation and the activity wasn't at a tropical storm status, but it was bad enough. A little rain, no, a lot of rain, howling winds throughout the night, but little destruction. As it left the southwest coast of Florida, it had developed into a tropical storm.

South Florida funnel
Funnel clouds and waterspouts were reported around South Florida Tuesday morning, including one that may have touched down in Miami-Dade County, but didn't cause damage. The sightings were followed a short time later by a hazardous weather warning by the National Weather Service in Miami for all of South Florida.

What about the August power outage? Kudos to the people in the Northeast and Midwest states who experienced the outages. They are true heroes. Watching the people on TV made me proud to be an American. As I understand it, there was very little violence and a lot of neighbor helping neighbor. We will let the authorities figure out the cause and the ramification. I pray the the United States Government will update our power grids.

As I put the finishing touches on this newsletter, I am having work done on the AC. It wasn't circulating the air. The tech said that the coils, etc. had to be cleaned. He serviced the whole unit. He said that it should run like a new machine after he's done. For $325.00 it better. The system is in good condition, just needs a good cleaning. They recommend a yearly maintenance check for all AC units in Florida. Most of the people I've talked with do it. I was just talking about home maintenance, AC and water heaters with Dad last week. I was contemplating scheduling a maintenance call on my AC this past summer. I should have done it a few weeks ago. Then I wouldn't have had to take two hours off work for the AC tech's visit. It only took me 9 weeks of putting it off, then the second week of work and it acts up. When in doubt, do it. Today's pay day so what the heck, it's a good day.

Entertainment

American Wedding, what a  movie. Saw it in August. It was so funny. Short, a little longer than an hour and a half, my kind of length. It was so funny that I found myself laughing out loud several times during the movie. The gang has grown up, well most of the gang. Stifler (Shaunn Scott) shows signs of growing up towards the end of the movie. He saves the day for Jim (Jason Biggs) and  Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). They are a strange couple. Murphy's law was strickly enforced in the movie, whatever could go wrong, went wrong. I didn't care much for the American Pie movies, but I really enjoyed this one.

I had to turn my head one time. The scene was so gross. Not to make any of you sick to your stomach, but in the movie Stifler, supposedly put part of a dog's waste material in his mouth. Gross by all standards. But he did it for an admirable reason. See the movie, but turn away when Stifler finds the ring in the dog's do-do.

There are a couple of new shows that debuted on Lifetime a few weeks ago. The two that I am referring to are on Saturday at 9:00 and 10:00. I believe the one at 9:00 is Wild Card starring Joely Fisher. 1-800-Missing is the one at 10:00. I saw the first show of each. They seemed pretty good, especially the 1-800-Missing. Each is repeated on Sunday and Thursday or Friday if I remember correctly. One thing about Lifetime, shows are constantly being repeated. And before you say anything, I know Lifetime "the channel for women", but I like a lot of shows that air on Lifetime. One thing about me, I try not to be discriminatory or narrow minded. Anyway The Golden Girls are on Lifetime, at least 7 times Monday through Friday. At 9:00, 10:00 a.m.; 12:00 noon; and 6:00, 6:30, 11:00, 11:30 p.m., but who's counting. I think that I can recite the dialogue verbatim of many of their shows, by this time. 1-800-Missing is about an agency that tries to find missing people by using a psychic.  Right up my alley.

There's another new show, I don't know how new, on Thursday nights on CBS, Without a Trace. It may not be new. It may be one of those shows I usually miss due to falling asleep. It's about people vanishing, not into thin air per se, but missing persons. I like those types of shows.

Our Sunday paper contains the TV supplement. Every Sunday night I check out what I want to see each day of the next week. I usually forget to watch the programs, but it gives me something to do on Sunday nights.

S.W.A.T. an excellent movie. Another pure entertainment movie. Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson gave excellent performances. Colin Farrell is one of my favorite up and coming young actors. Hopefully his personal life will tame down a bit since he will soon be a father. I don't think it will, but in my opinion he is an excellent actor.

The movie was fast moving, violent and totally entertaining. A predictable and over used plot, but interesting.  Surprisingly to me there were probably equal number of adults at the movie as teenagers. I thought the movie would appeal more to adults. But it was summer and those school aged kids were on vacation, so, what did I expect. I recommend this movie, if you are so inclined.

Health & Fitness

A couple of weeks ago, actually it was the last Saturday morning in July, I woke up and discovered a rash starting to develop on my right forearm. Over the next few days it got worse and had spread to my other arm, upper legs and buttocks. I called my family doctor on Wednesday, he said to call a dermatologist. I called the one he suggested. That derm didn't have an opening for a week and a half. I told the receptionist that I would have to go to the ER before a week and a half. It itched terribly.

I went to a derm in 1992, so I decided to call that doctor. Well, that doctor's practice had grown into a conglomeration. In 1992 he was one lonely doctor in one lonely office. Now in 2003 he was the owner of a corporation, offices in 3 or 4 locations with many other doctors and PAs working for him. The receptionist got me an appointment for the next day.

I visited the doctor on Friday, August 1. The doctor was a young man himself, and he was training a resident or some kind of novice practitioner. I felt like I was on ER. They kept conferring with each other, while at the same time the elder (not by much), was instructing the younger doctor. He said that it was definitely an allergic reaction. He asked all the right questions. Finally he mentioned trees. I suddenly remembered what I had done the day before the rash started. I cut down one of my old ficus trees, in my condo. And scrubbed the planter because it was stained with the ficus sap, etc. He said that a lot of people are allergic to that particular type of tree. He gave me 3 prescriptions. I go back the end of August, which will be before I even publish this newsletter.

Hopefully I will have my new and improved dental bridge by the end of August. My old bridge is serving as a temporary. I can't bite on it for fear that it will break. Everything I eat has to be cut in bite size portions. At least I'm fortunate to be able to get a new bridge.

********************************************

Flu shots. My family doctor is advising me to get one at the end of September. I already have the appointment. He says that the thinking has changed on who should get a flu shot. He says that the "medical establishment" is advising anyone in the work force, especially the 50 and over crowd, get a flu shot. I guess if your 50 or older or maybe 55 you don't get a shot, but rather a puff up your nose. It sounds a little like "puff the magic dragon" to me.

********************************************

Diet, I hate that term, is going well. Down to the mid 190's. I can wear all the clothes in my closet now. Even the ones way back in the closet. The jeans and shirts that would not fit  7 years ago. The clothes I bought last year, I can't wear. It feels good.

Healthier eating, eating in moderation and increased activity is my secret. I say healthier eating, as in safer sex, because I eat everything, but in moderation and not everyday. I still eat food that is not good for me, but in moderation. Just as safer sex. The only safe sex is no sex, except with yourself, which gets pretty boring. So using a condom and practicing safer sex, helps prevent the spread of STDs, but doesn't eliminate them.

********************************************

Just got my HIV test results, negative, one more time. I've been testing for the HIV virus for the past 11 years. My first test was in February 1992. I've been tested 5 or 6 times over the last 11 years. I feel that a person needs to be proactive in confronting ones health.

Unless one is a hermit, does not have sex with another being (even married couples), never gets a blood transfusion and never shares drug inducing needles, one is at risk for sexually transmitted diseases. Safer sex does lower the probability of HIV infection, but does not erase it entirely. Sex with a married partner (hopefully the person's married partner and not another's) does lower the probability of infection, but it does not guarantee it. How many married people stray? As far as blood transfusions and drug use, what can I say? You know the drill.

I started getting tested in 1992 because of the widespread HIV/AIDS education. Magic Johnson had just announced that he was infected. It took the United States almost a decade to recognize the dangers of HIV. It took all that time to understand the fact the AIDS is everyone's disease, not a "gay disease". The spread of the disease is directly related to people's behavior. People can be "safe" by changing their behavior and having safer sex.

It is very difficult to "catch" the disease. Specific behavior is required to become infected with HIV which is widely believed the precursor to full blown AIDS. You can not get AIDS by casual contact. It is much more easier to catch other STDs and hepatitis than it is to catch AIDS.

Back in December 1991 I stated researching HIV/AIDS. Once again a little knowledge is sometimes a terrible thing. I should say, irrational thought processes stemming from knowledge is a terrible thing. I researched the causes and symptoms of AIDS because I was interested and thought that I might be exhibiting the symptoms. As you may know, the early  symptoms of HIV infection are very similar to the flu. After a couple of weeks the initial symptoms subside. The infected person tests positive for HIV anytime from 30 days after exposure to 6 months or in some cases longer. It requires 5 to 10 years after initial infection for symptoms of HIV/AIDS to manifest themselves.

I thought that I had the symptoms. I read in the newspaper about the different types of testing. I made an appointment at the Palm Beach Health Department for anonymous testing. The results were negative. I like to test every year or two just to make sure they stay negative.

In January of 1992 after I made the appointment for the anonymous testing, I was so convinced that I had "it" that I thought I should tell Mom of my concern in order to prepare her for the consequences. If I had "it", I knew that I would have to tell Mom so she would be aware of my situation. I thought that letting her know that I suspected the situation was better than waiting to tell her that I did indeed have "it".

Mom was an angel sent by God. I explained to her all that I had known about the disease and why I thought I had it. I told her that if I had "it", I was probably at the final stages due to the research that I had done. She was nothing but supportive. I don't know how she dealt with it, but she never let me know anything but love and support. The unfortunate thing, we had to wait for a week for the appointment and then 2 weeks for the results. Now the process is much faster.

When I went for my results, I was prepared for the worse. When the nurse said, "negative" I was relieved, but knew that testing on a continued basis is the only way of being proactive. I came home and called Mom. Of course she was delighted, but you know Mom, she isn't the kind of person who expresses her emotions in words. Again she was nothing but supportive with me. I remember she said, "...I thought that we might have to come to Florida this year...". She seemed to take it with a grain of salt. Thank you Mom.

The only other person I confided in at that time was a good friend who lived in Ft. Lauderdale. We still confide in each other concerning such things. Until the writing of this newsletter, I have not confided in any other human being.

So why am I mentioning this now? Probably for selfish reasons. Probably to substantiate my life. To give it credibility. It has more to do with how I feel about "me", rather than how you feel about it. A secondary reason, education. As I said before, we need to be proactive with our lives as well as our deaths.

Over the last 11 years I hope that I've successfully, at least attempted, dealt with life and death issues as they relate to me. I think it is important to accept life and accept death on our own terms. We can not escape death. We do not have the privilege of choosing the conditions for our death. We do have the opportunity to prepare for our death.

I view the preparation as a emergency crisis intervention. In other words, just like our government, local, state and federal, must have emergency procedures in place for the unthinkable occurrences, we too must have emergency procedures in place for the unthinkable in our lives. Yes, this preparation includes the obvious - physical, financial, emotional and spiritual preparedness.

When I breath my final breath, I do not want to be concerned about accepting death at that point. I want to breath my last breath in the comfort of knowing that I have thought through my life and I have thought through my death. What happens is in the hands of God. I will have no regrets. I hope.

Nothing is 100% guaranteed. Breathing that last breath will still be, so to speak, scary, but at that time I will just put into play my "emergency procedures plan".

Updates:

Rash from above, dermatologically speaking, it's gone. But the derm saw a mole he didn't like, so I had to get an biopsy right there on the spot. I'll know the results around September 8. No more sun worship for me. The only heavenly body that I will be worshiping is the moon. I'm going to buy an umbrella for my daytime beach activities. The mole was right in the middle of my back, a place I probably missed when I applied sun screen. The stuff must work. In Florida, as well as many other areas, sun screen when you are in the sun, mosquito repellant when you are outside at dawn or dusk and a condom when you have sex. Just to be safe, does one need a condom when he or she has sex by himself or herself? What ever happened to the free love of the sixties?

Dental Bridge, got it, looks good, doing fine.

Politics

What do you think about the California Governor's recall? Do you even care? I have a feeling that a lot of Americans couldn't care less. Especially with the antics that go on in politics, who cares?

The California recall does have repercussions for the American political process. I believe 18 or so states have the recall option in their constitutions. I don't think it has been exercised much. In my opinion the recall provision undermines the election process. We have an election. The people speak. I think whoever is elected should be given the specified time period to carry out his or her term of office. If not, anytime the elected official has a substantial dip in the polls, a recall effort could start. We would be throwing people out of office every other month.

According to the rules of the California recall, the ballot will contain two questions. The first will ask the voter if the present governor should be recalled from office. The second will ask for the name of a replacement. Anyone is permitted to "get on" the ballot as long as they qualify. The requirements are minimal. The political process is bypassed and ignored in my view. The California recall is a joke. It is making a political cartoon out of one of our fundamental American rights.

Look who is running for governor of California. By the way, who in their right mind, would ever want to be governor of California? Especially now, in the present economic situation that California is experiencing. I will say that a majority of states are experiencing similar problems. Most of these financial difficulties are the direct affect of the Bush economic policies.

Although in the case of Governor Gray Davis, there are many other variables at play. Gov. Davis is not one of my political heroes. Far from it. He was dishonest, underhanded and a disgrace to the political process. He did not have a successful plan to run the state of California. His failure is a function of greed and dishonestly.

Governor Davis did inherit a state with many problems due to the previous governor, republican, Pete Wilson. From the beginning of his term, Davis did not effectively and energetically tackle the problems of California. The democratic state legislature did not do it's part in finding solutions to the state's problems. Problems multiplied. Now the state is in drastic need of a enthusiastic leader.

What about the terminator? Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger? I don't know. Terminator Schwarzenegger may be the right choice. He does appear to be honest, straightforward and attuned to the welfare of the common citizen. He wants to bring the government of California back to the people. I don't know if conservation Republicans will vote for him. He is a very liberal Republican. Will his wife, Maria Shriver, vote for him?

Personally, I think the law should allow for the Lieutenant Governor to replace the Governor in a recall. To me, that makes more sense. What's the reason for the Lieutenant Governor anyway? Therefore, I hope the citizens of California recall Governor Davis. I hope Lieutenant Governor Cruz M. Bustamante is elected Governor of California.

During the electricity crisis the president of the United States was at a Republican fund raising dinner in California lobbying for financial support for his 2004 bid for re-election. The Vice-president was on vacation in Wyoming. Who was minding the nation? White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card was in charge. He gave the official White House statement to the press immediately following the commencement of the crisis.

President Bush continued with his "networking" with the wealthiest of Americans. Of course. Why would you think the President would do otherwise. He was acting true to character. He was taking care of the priorities at the time - his re-election fund raising. George W. Bush seems to be oblivious to the problems and needs of the ordinary man and woman. It's not his fault. Just like his father, according to former Texas Governor Ann Richards, "Poor George, he can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth." [1988 keynote address, Democratic National Convention].

Religion & Spiritualism

I can not believe the Epiphany that society is apparently experiencing. The Supreme Court overturns a Texas Sodomy law. The bishops of the American Anglican Episcopal Church elect an openly gay priest to the office of bishop. It's reported by the media that an overwhelming majority of Americans are tolerant of gay and lesbian people. It seems like overnight America, as a whole, is becoming sexual preference blinded.

I feel that people should be able to live their lives in a manner of their choosing. As long as they are not hurting any other person or group of persons they should be free to live their lives. As I've said many time in the past, we do not have the right to judge another human being. That is God's right, not ours. You can have a difference of opinion with people, you can choose not to be friends with people, but you do not have the right to deny any person or group of persons their God given rights. In this case, their American, constitutional rights.

What is the Catholic Church saying about all of this? One thing you must be mindful of, as with many Catholic believes, the official word from Rome concerning sexual preference is a lot of times different or in conflict with the practiced and unofficial behavior of church officials. What do I mean by that statement? The Pope and the leaders of the church release statements of doctrine and opinion. They release the official Catholic opinions on such subjects. These opinions are not always shared by first, the laity and second by the more liberal minded American bishops.

These opinions are subject to the conscience of people. They are not matters of church doctrine. That are matters of conscience. Remember birth control in the sixties. The church was and still is adamantly against it. But in the counseling sessions between American clergy and their faithful, it was considered a matter of conscience. In simple terms, if you thought it was ok, good. By the way the Pope has not spoken "infallibly" on these types of issues.

The doctrine of infallibility has been used in rare situations. Everything the Pope says is not the undeniable word of God. It is the opinion of the Pope. Contemporary infallibility statements are such things as, the concept of the Blessed Trinity and the Solemnity of Mary. The Pope has written letters or opinion papers called encyclicals, about the church's views on current social issues. These are not infallible. As Catholics, you are given the fee choice to determine your view of the issues. These are matters of conscience.

What is the Catholic Church? According to it's founder, Jesus Christ, the church is it's people. We are the church. Why can't we have a say in the doctrine and the opinions of the church? The laity must be included in the decision making in the Catholic Church. The hierarchy does not want to give up this right. The clergy wants the laity to be subservient to the hierarchy. The hierarchy wants the people of God to rely on them to conduct the so called "work of God". Our founder, Jesus Christ has ordained his followers, you and I, to determine the direction of His church.

What about the other religions? Some Protestant denominations are more realistic in their view of their church. I don't know for sure, but I seem to remember from my high school theology that one of the reasons for the Protestant Reformation was this exact feeling. The clergy was corrupt. They were not following the teachings of Jesus Christ. The common man or woman was not given the proper role in administering to the needs of the church. The Protestant Reformation was not all bad.

The Jewish clergy is also more sympathetic to the idea that the people are the church, in this case the synagogue.

In all religions there exist people who take themselves too seriously. People who believe that God speaks to them only. People who have preconceived notions and are ignorant and not willing to hear and compromise with other views. Yes, I'm referring to the moral majority. These people tend to use God's Word as a manipulation device to "control" peoples' beliefs. They feel that they are the only people who know what's right and wrong. End of conversation. Many of these people do not even recognize the Word anymore. These people are in direct conflict to Jesus Christ and His church.

We are all God's people. Why can we not get along? We do not have to agree on everything. We may not have the same opinions. We may see the world differently. Why can we not compromise and let people decide for themselves how to lead their lives.

So, if we do not believe everything our church teaches, are we still members of that church? I think so. Why? Because it is ultimately the church of Jesus Christ that is the bottom line. It is the rules associated with Jesus Christ's church that we, Christians, must adhere.

And remember, no person has the exclusive Word of God. It's a matter of conscience.

Tech Talk

I just saw on my EarthLink start page that HP, Hewlett-Packard, has developed a device that will transfer videos on video tapes to DVD. The DVD Movie Writer dc3000, is priced around $399 and should be available in mid-September. According to the article, "The gadget combines features to complete a task that often requires separate purchases of software, a video capture card and a DVD burner. It connects to a computer through a USB cable and can record videos from a VHS, Hi8, Digital 8 or Mini DVD player onto a DVD."

Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't know about you, but I've had the unfortunate experience, more than once, of one of my favorite videos coming apart in the VCR. On one particular occasion, I gingerly rescued the tape from the VCR, took it apart and fixed the tape. I saved the video. I was holding my breath the entire time.

DVD are advertised to last 100 years. CD's are supposed to last the same period of time. Zip disks are next, then video tapes. I think I have it right. DVDs are so easy to store, they take up little space. I think I will get one. Of course I haven't purchased 90% of the things that I told myself that I was going to get, technology related as well as others.

I still haven't purchased that external hard drive. I keep checking the prices. I see that CompUSA has a Maxtor 80 gig external hard drive for $99.00. Of course that is after 2 manufacturer's rebates and one store rebate. I believe the original price approaches $170.00. I won't bore you with the specifications.

********************************************

I just read an article in the business supplement in today's paper concerning checking your bank balances daily. One of the regular contributing writers has a column in the business supplement concerning financial advice and hints for the common man and woman. He says he checks his bank balances and credit card balances on a daily basis. He says that if you do this daily you will be aware of a fraud or a mistake in time to correct the situation. He says that he has had deposits credited to other peoples' accounts, other peoples' debits withdrawn from his account, etc. I don't know where he does his banking, but if he has had so many problems with the clerical staff at the financial institutions, I would change institutions.

I must confess, I too check balances on line. I too check to see when my checks clear, etc. , but not on a daily basis. I check my credit card activities on line, too. But I have a lot of other things to do in my life, I can't check every day or even every week. It does make sense to take a proactive approach to one's financial well-being.

What about that worm infecting all of those computers, the MSBlass worm.  Businesses as well as all home PC users must be aware and take a proactive approach to maintaining the security of their networks and computers. Yes, these invasions are primarily related to computers in business use. However, many of these virus, worm, etc. attacks affect home computers. No one is safe on the the Internet.

The devastating results of such attacks can be greatly alleviated. Go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and download the "fixes" from Microsoft. The "critical updates and service packs" are the most crucial. Also, antivirus and firewall software must be updated regularly.

Every time you log on to the Internet through your Internet connection your computer is at risk. Updated firewall software is the only way to protect your computer and everything on your hard drive from malicious attacks from unsavory Internet users.

Every time you open an email you are susceptible to malicious attack from unsavory Internet users. Antivirus software must be installed and updated regularly.

 Inspirational Quote

(On her failed marriage; she says she spent years "using" her husband.)

"I am looking back and realizing what the truth was. The motives back of the action. I don't think that it was all as cold-blooded as it sounds. I hope not. But the truth has to be that I was a terrible pig. My aim was ME ME ME. All the way -- up -- down -- all about."

--Katharine Hepburn,
from Katharine Hepburn's 1991 book, "Me."
