The primary will be held in September.

Major Candidates...Primary

Previously this webmaster enthusiastically supported Janet Reno for the Democratic candidate for governor. However, his opinion has changed. An article appearing in the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel on Saturday, July 27, 2002 is the primary reason for this change.  "Long shot Governor Candidate Has Worthy Ideas", by Buddy Nevins, a political columnist, raises some pertinent questions concerning the platforms of the Democratic candidates.

It has been assumed that either Janet Reno or Bill McBride will be the Democratic candidate, but what about Daryl Jones. It has been assumed that Janet Reno and Bill McBride are the most qualified and have the best platforms to be the next governor, but what about Daryl Jones. 

The article discusses the ideas of Mr. Jones.  After reading this article, the webmaster is inclined to agree with it's author.  We as Floridians,  need to take a closer look at Daryl Jones. He has many good ideas for the future of this great state of Florida.

Governor Daryl Jones, has a nice ring to it. More importantly, Governor Daryl Jones would have the best plan for the people of Florida, the "real Florida". Make no mistake, it would take a miracle to see Governor Daryl Jones in Tallahassee.

But Stranger things have happened...

...former Vice-President Gore won the popular vote, by over 500,000 votes in the 2000 presidential election, but he is not in the White House. Yes, I understand the Electoral College and the constitutional process in electing a president, but it also says in the constitution that all votes should be counted in democratic elections. It is the government's duty to insure that equal voting access exists in all situations. The wishes of many of the people of Florida were not heard on that election day. 

...the then Governor Bush out spent the formal vice-president in the Florida recount (according to the Sun-Sentinel). Money equates with winning elections? That money would have been more ethically spent insuring that the results of the Florida vote was truly representative of the will of the Floridians who voted. Mr. Bush should have recognized the unethical if not illegal activity that took place in Florida on election day. He should have called for a recount of the entire state. Then if he received the most votes, he would have been legitimately hailed as the victor in Florida. Why didn't he do what was right and ethical for the nation? Just as former President Clinton will always have the Monica Lewinsky episode associated with his presidency, President Bush's presidency will always have the cloud of illegitimacy associated with it.

...the Supreme Court of the United States of America halted the recount in Florida, discounting the legitimate, constitutionally ensured votes of thousands of Floridians, many of which are the most "needy" of the Florida voters. A group that the Bush Republicans seem have no need for when one considers the present Bush initiatives and Republican congressional voting records. The president of the United States of America, the president of the people, was appointed by the Supreme Court!

...then there's the Corporate scandals...which is the group that the Bush Republicans cater to, this is their special interest group. In the process, President Bush who says he is compassionate to the needs of the common man, has a history of doing unethical, but not necessarily illegal, corporate business practices. And now he expects the American people, all Americans, to trust him in matters of social security, Medicare, prescription drugs, and maybe most importantly, the insurance of our personal rights as listed in the United States Bill of Rights?

...and the Vice-President, yes Vice-President Cheney (is he still around?) under legal investigation for dubious corporate business practices.

 ...Is this strange enough for you?

Let's face it, many politicians, as well as many people who are in positions of power and influence have a degree of corruption associated with their situation. Throughout history the Democratic Party has aligned itself with the common man and woman, the "least of His brethren". The Republican Party has aligned itself with big business, corporate interests. I ask you, if corruption is rampant in politics (even though it's wrong and should be investigated, uncovered and prosecuted), which party would you rather have in power - the party that supports the common man and woman or the party that aligns itself with big business and corporate interests? Are your investments in the stock market or in life, growing? How many senior citizens have had to rethink their retirement plans or have had to go back to work because their retirements have dwindled? The Sun-Sentinel just reported that an 85 year old person had to find a job because over the last few years his retirement has dwindled to almost nothing. He needs a job to live, at 85! As I grow older, I prefer to be represented by Democrats. At least Social Security, Medicare, Prescription Drugs, Education and Child Welfare will be secure.

Getting back to the Florida 2002 Governor's Primary. Daryl Jones is a viable Democratic candidate for the office of Governor of the state of Florida.
